SUMMARY:#13 Masterclass on ‘Empowering Youth\, Enabling NbS: The WeForWater Fellowship Story’
DESCRIPTION:India is at a critical juncture where water scarcity and climate change are not just environmental issues but also economic and social challenges. According to NITI Aayog’s Composite Water Management Index (2018)\, 600 million Indians already face high to extreme water stress\, and by 2030\, demand will outstrip supply twofold.\nAt the same time\, the country is undergoing a massive demographic and employment transition: \n\nYoung people make up over 60% of India’s population.\nThe World Economic Forum estimates that green jobs will be among the fastest-growing employment sectors in the coming decade.\nYet\, there is a skills gap: most educational and training programs don’t prepare youth for sustainability-linked livelihoods and nature-based solutions to respond to water scarcity and climate change.\n\nTraditional fellowships in India (e.g.\, Gandhi Fellowship\, India Fellow\, Teach for India Fellowship) have successfully created leadership pipelines in education\, governance\, and rural development. However\, there is a void in nature-based solutions skills at the community level to solve water and climate-focused leadership gaps\, that combine technical expertise with community engagement\, much required to address the challenges.\nGuruJal’s WeForWater Fellowship is India’s first apprenticeship program dedicated to building a new generation of climate and water leaders. By combining on-ground experiential learning with expert mentorship\, the fellowship equips young professionals with 21st-century skills in sustainability\, governance\, and community engagement. Fellows work directly on projects in water\, forestry\, and agriculture\, turning scientific insights into practical solutions. The program not only addresses India’s urgent water and climate challenges but also creates pathways for meaningful green jobs\, ensuring that today’s youth become tomorrow’s stewards of a water-secure future. \nWhat the Masterclass Covers: \n\nHow has the WeforWater Fellowship contributed to strengthening local leadership and capacity for NbS\nWhat institutional arrangements (district programmes\, government partnerships\, etc.) have enabled its success?\nHow can the fellowship model be replicated or adapted for other NbS priorities (e.g.\, urban greening\, heat resilience\, wetlands restoration)?\nWhat lessons can other organisations draw to design similar fellowships or programmes?\n\nWho Should Attend: \n\nGovernment officials and policymakers responsible for designing and planning water security and natural resource preservation projects\nResearchers\, academicians and professionals contributing to policy frameworks for capacity building of local community and ensuring how to make nature-based solutions sustainable\nNGOs\, private sector stakeholders and community advocates looking to integrate nature-based solutions\n\nREGISTER

SUMMARY:Forests4Water: The Role of Forest Ecosystems in Safeguarding Water Resources
DESCRIPTION:Urban areas in South Asia face escalating water stress\, ecological degradation\, and climate risks due to rapid land-use change\, deforestation\, wetland loss\, and pollution\, all of which disrupt water cycles and are worsened by climate change. Forest ecosystems\, whether in upstream catchments\, along coasts\, or within cities\, play a vital role in regulating flows\, recharging aquifers\, filtering pollutants\, and buffering climate extremes\, yet remain undervalued in urban planning. \nWith urban decisions influencing distant ecosystems and climate extremes intensifying\, this three-part webinar series will explore how forests can be systematically integrated into city planning\, water governance\, and climate adaptation. Session 1 will exclusively focus on landlocked cities often suffering from shrinking green cover\, degraded seasonal rivers\, and over-extraction of groundwater\, which compromise recharge\, intensify urban heat\, and flood risks. \nTarget audience for the webinar: \nUrban and regional planners\nWater utility professionals and engineers\nForest and environment department officials\nNGOs and think tanks working on water and landscape conservation\nPolicy makers and donor agencies\nResearchers\, academics\, and students in environmental sciences and urban studies \n \nREGISTER

SUMMARY:#10 Masterclass on ‘Towards a framework for lake rejuvenation: Lessons in Urban Water Resilience from Bengaluru
DESCRIPTION:Urban lakes have long served as vital infrastructure for water management\, ecology and community life. In the face of intensifying climate risks\, rapid urbanization and increasing water insecurity\, protecting and rejuvenating these ecosystems is now more urgent than ever. Across India\, urban lakes are being reimagined not merely as scenic or recreational features\, but as dynamic ecological systems that regulate hydrological flows\, recharge aquifers\, buffer flood risks\, moderate microclimates and anchor socio-cultural and livelihood networks. \nThis masterclass presents an integrated\, step-by-step Framework for Lake Rejuvenation\, developed by WELL Labs and Friends of Lakes with the support of Bruhat Bengaluru Mahanagar Palike (BBMP). The framework offers a robust and adaptable approach to restoring Bengaluru’s urban lakes and is relevant to shallow\, peri-urban and urban lakes across peninsular India. It highlights how rejuvenation can be approached holistically—through co-developed visions\, targeted asset design and community-engaged monitoring tools. \nDrawing on scientific diagnostics and lived community experiences\, the framework emphasizes the role of lakes within broader hydrological networks\, rather than as isolated assets. Tools such as the Lake Asset Design Tool and Lake Health Index will be introduced\, supporting performance-based planning over infrastructure-centric fixes. \nWhat the Masterclass Covers: \n\nWhy urban lake rejuvenation is critical for India’s climate and water security\nComponents of a structured\, 5-stage lake rejuvenation framework—from diagnosis to monitoring\nHow systems thinking enables lake rejuvenation efforts to align with broader hydrological and ecological networks across lake\, catchment and watershed scales\nPractical case insights from Bengaluru\, including participatory lake visioning and design processes\n\nWho Should Attend: \n\nGovernment and municipal officials engaged in water resource management\, lake restoration and urban planning\nUrban practitioners and consultants designing or implementing lake rejuvenation efforts\nResearchers and academics working on hydrology\, urban ecology and water governance\nFunders and CSR teams seeking outcome-oriented\, replicable models for urban resilience\nCommunity organizations and citizen groups invested in sustainable lake stewardship\n\n

SUMMARY:#8 Masterclass on ‘Value of Ecosystem Services in the Urban Landscape’
DESCRIPTION:Ecosystem services are the essential benefits humans derive from nature\, including air and water purification\, climate regulation\, carbon sequestration and biodiversity support. As urban areas face increasing environmental degradation\, it is crucial to recognize and quantify the economic and social benefits of natural spaces.   \nValuing these services also helps to understand the cost of actions that harm or reduce these environmental benefits. With this data\, cities can make informed decisions\, prioritize investments in green infrastructure\, support biodiversity and ensure long-term resilience to climate change.  \nHistorically\, non-urban ecosystems (forests\, wetlands\, etc.) have been the focus of ecosystem service valuations. However\, this masterclass will highlight the need for valuations in the urban landscape\, especially in the context of climate change\, with a hands-on tutorial in the methodology for calculating it.  \nThe Masterclass will cover the following topics: \n\nFrameworks for ecosystem service valuation – understanding both direct and indirect benefits provided by ecosystems.\nMethods for calculating the value of ecosystem services.\nA hands-on example of calculating ecosystem service value in an urban context.\nIdentifying the difficulties and limitations in applying these valuation methods to urban areas. \n\nWho Should Attend: \n\nGovernment stakeholders working to develop and scale urban greening strategies \nGIS & Data Practitioners working on urban canopy mapping\, green space accessibility and spatial decision-making\nClimate and impact investors looking to understand evidence-based metrics such as the 3-30-300 framework to inform funding decisions for scalable urban greening projects\nResearchers and academic institutions interested in applying or advancing spatial frameworks for urban greening
